The Spiritual Baptist Church

Established on September 23, 1996, under the Canada Corporations Act (Part II) of the Government of Canada, The Spiritual Baptist Church of Canada- L'Église Baptiste Spirituelle du Canada (the "Spiritual Baptist Church" or the "Church") has emerged as an integral part of Christ’s Bride, which is His Church, through the transformative nature of spiritual teachings and forms of worship.

The Apostolic Overseer, His Holy Eminence, The Most Reverend Pastor Christopher W. Jackman-El-Hajj was consecrated on September 7, 1997, as the first Chief Pastor and Ecclesiastical Authority of the Church and continues in this ecclesiastical capacity to present (the “Apostolic Overseer”).

The Church is governed through a body knowns as The General Assembly of the Spiritual Baptist Church of Canada (the “General Assembly”) that is comprised of two branches known as The Congress of Delegates of the General Assembly of the Spiritual Baptist Church of Canada (the “Congress of Delegates” or the “Executive Branch”) and The Convocation of Bishops of the General Assembly of the Spiritual Baptist Church of Canada (the “Convocation of Bishops” or the “Apostolic Branch”) that convenes tri-annually to discuss, debate, and vote on matters concerning Church policies and governance, Church structure, and Church finances.

The Congress of Delegates is presided over by the President of the Congress of Delegates, and the Convocation of Bishops is presided over by the Apostolic Overseer. Each branch along with the General Assembly are authorized by the Constitution and Canons of the General Assembly of the Spiritual Baptist Church of Canada, as amended (the “Constitution and Canons”) adopted on September 6, 1996, at the first General Assembly.

About the
Congress of Delegates

The Congress of Delegates is composed of members of the clergy, other than bishops, and laity elected by their respective congregations, dioceses, and archdioceses in accordance with the Constitution and Canons to a term of three-years to serve as delegates (“Delegates”). Delegates are elected to the General Assembly designated offices at the tri-annual meeting of the General Assembly and to Congress of Delegates designated offices the year prior to the tri-annual meeting of the General Assembly.

About the
Convocation of Bishops

The Convocation of Bishops is composed of all bishops of the Church, actively serving or retired. The Episcopal and pastoral care of the Church are entrusted to the Convocation of Bishops. Every episcopal jurisdiction of this Church is overseen by a duly consecrated bishop who serves under the ecclesiastical authority provided for by the Apostolic Overseer for the betterment, growth, and protection of the Church.

About the
General Assembly

The General Assembly is a tri-annual joint meeting of the Apostolic Branch and the Executive Branch. During the joint meeting, known as the Joint Session, Delegates and Bishops are elected and appointed, respectively, to Standing Commissions and Standing Committees who are responsible for the furtherance of unresolved matters during Joint Sessions, pursuant to the Constitution and Canons. The Church believes that open and just dialogue amongst both clergy and laity yields a better understanding of how the Doctrine and Worship of the Church are received, interpreted, and practiced.
